Tolba, who holds both German and Egyptian citizenship, was among several players released after Bochum finished at the bottom of the Bundesliga table with just 25 points, Kingfut.com reported.
A product of Bochum's youth academy, Tolba was promoted to the first team three seasons ago and was once considered a bright defensive prospect. He also represented Germany at U18 and U19 levels, signaling a promising international future.
However, the young defender's progress was severely hindered by two serious cruciate ligament injuries, which ultimately prevented him from making a senior league appearance for the club.
Despite spending time with the first team, Tolba mostly featured for Bochum's Under-21 side, helping them earn promotion from the Oberliga to the Regionalliga. With his contract expiring this summer, the club decided against offering him a new deal.
In a statement released on the club's website, Bochum expressed gratitude to Tolba and nine other departing players, including another academy graduate Paul Grave.
"Paul Grave and Mohamed Tolba come from our own talent factory and have had the opportunity to play professional football from time to time this season, but have mostly played for our U21 team and have contributed to the club's promotion from the Oberliga to the Regionalliga," read a statement from the German club.
The release marks a turning point for Tolba, who now looks to regain fitness and revive his career elsewhere.
