USA Boss Mauricio Pochettino proud of progress as knockout stage beckons

Despite ending their group stage with defeat to Türkiye and Mauricio Pochettino cutting a frustrated figure afterwards, the USA coach believes his side has made significant progress under his leadership.

The Americans still finished top of their group to secure a place in the FIFA World Cup round of 32, where they will face Bosnia and Herzegovina in Santa Clara.

Speaking ahead of the knockout clash tomorrow, Pochettino, who is set for a contract extension, said the team's development since his appointment is evident.

"The mindset and the mentality is perfect. We are so happy with the way we've been working since day one when we meet in New York. I've seen a massive improvement in my team and now we can compete for something that was once only in our dreams."

The euphoria in the US around what the team could potentially achieve has placed pressure on Pochettino and his charges, but the coach says he is guiding a team that is calm under the circumstances.

Pochettino also addressed the favourites tag heading into the fixture against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

"First of all, I don't believe we are the favourite team, because we've seen over the last how difficult it is for everyone. I think we can be the favourites afterwards, no?

"Everyone thought that Germany and Netherlands were favourites."
