Tottenham sign defender Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton

The 26-year-old centre-back has signed a long-term contract in north London, becoming Tottenham's third arrival since De Zerbi took charge. The move reunites the defender with the Italian coach, under whom he developed into one of Brighton's most reliable performers.

Van Hecke leaves Brighton after five years at the club, having joined from Dutch side NAC Breda in 2020 for just 1.8 million pounds. The transfer represents a significant profit for the Seagulls, who are also understood to have secured a 20 per cent sell-on clause as part of the agreement.

"It's a huge honour to become a Spurs player and when you join such a big club, it's a dream come true," Van Hecke said after the move was confirmed.

The defender added that his existing relationship with De Zerbi played a major role in the transfer, while fellow Netherlands international Micky van de Ven also helped convince him of the club's ambitions.

"I already have a really strong connection with the head coach, who I'm looking forward to working with again. Micky has also told me some great things about the club, so I can't wait to get started," he added.

Van Hecke established himself as a key figure at Brighton, making 131 appearances and starting 36 of the club's 38 Premier League matches last season as Fabian Hurzeler's side secured an eighth-place finish and qualified for Europe for only the second time in their history.

De Zerbi welcomed the reunion, describing the Dutch defender as an ideal fit for the style of play he wants to implement at Tottenham.

"Jan Paul is someone I know very well from our time together at Brighton, and I'm delighted to be working with him again," said the Spurs head coach.

"He is a strong, intelligent centre-back who is brave in possession and plays with personality. Those are important qualities for the way I want our team to set-up."

Sporting director Johan Lange revealed Tottenham had monitored Van Hecke's progress for several years and believes he fits both the club's immediate needs and long-term plans.

"As we continue to build our squad, it is important to bring in players who can contribute immediately while also being part of our long-term vision," Lange said. "Jan Paul fits that profile perfectly, and we are excited about what he will bring to the team."
