Tottenham have completed the signing of England midfielder Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid in a deal worth 34 million pounds.

The 25-year-old returns to the Premier League just a year after leaving Chelsea for Spain, where he struggled for regular starts under Diego Simeone, making only a handful of LaLiga appearances this season. Spurs moved decisively to secure his services, beating off interest from Aston Villa, who had explored a loan deal but were unwilling to commit to an outright purchase.

Gallagher's arrival comes at a critical moment for Tottenham. Midfield options have been severely depleted, with Rodrigo Bentancur ruled out for months after requiring surgery on a hamstring injury, while Lucas Bergvall has also been sidelined. Recent setbacks have added further strain, including injuries to Mohammed Kudus and Richarlison, as pressure grows on head coach Thomas Frank following a run of just one win in seven matches across all competitions.

Speaking after completing the move, Gallagher said he needed little convincing to join Spurs.

"I wanted to be a Spurs player and thankfully the club felt the same. It was very easy and happened very quickly. I'm ready to get on the pitch, play for these fans and create special moments together."

Frank believes Gallagher's profile makes him an immediate asset, both on and off the field.

"Conor is a top midfielder who brings leadership, intensity and personality. He has captained teams before, understands different leagues, and his pressing, running power and eye for goal will strengthen us in a key area."

A product of Chelsea's academy, which he joined as a youngster in 2006, Gallagher built his reputation through loan spells at Charlton, Swansea, West Bromwich Albion and Crystal Palace before becoming a regular in the Premier League. In total, he has made 136 appearances in the competition, in addition to representing Atletico Madrid 77 times across all competitions.

At international level, Gallagher has earned 22 England caps and featured prominently during Euro 2024, although he will be hoping that a return to English football improves his chances of securing a place in England's squad for this year's World Cup.

Tottenham currently sit 14th in the Premier League table and were recently knocked out of the FA Cup by Aston Villa, but they remain in the hunt for Champions League progression. Gallagher could make his debut as Spurs prepare to host relegation-threatened West Ham United on Saturday, with Frank looking for a spark to reignite their campaign.
