Top-ranked Germany too strong for Morocco at World Cup

Germany claimed a decisive 6-0 victory over Group H rivals Morocco in their Women's World Cup opener on Monday.

Germany, who showed exactly why they are ranked second in the world behind the USA, took the early lead in the 11th minute through a high press strategy. Kathrin Hendrich delivered a perfect cross to Alexandra Popp, who powered a header home from seven yards.

In the 39th minute, Popp scored again, doubling Germany's lead with a shoulder goal from the edge of the six-yard box after a corner delivery.

In the 46th minute, Klara Buehl rifled home from eight yards, extending Germany's lead just 10 seconds after the restart.

The 54th minute brought a disastrous own goal for Morocco as Hanane Ait El Haj turned the ball into her own net after a defensive header from Elodie Nakkach.

Germany capitalised on another unfortunate moment in the 79th minute, as the ball deflected off goalkeeper Khadija Er-Rmichi's punch onto her own defender, Mrabet, and then over the line with Redouani's unintentional help. Alexandra Popp made sure of the goal, but it was credited as another own goal.

In the 89th minute, Lea Schuller capitalised on a rebound, slotting the ball into an empty net after Er-Rmichi's decent save.

The two teams will be back in action on Sunday for more Group H action when Germany face Colombia and Morocco take on South Korea.
