The Manchester City midfielder started both March friendlies, first in a number 10 role during the 1-1 draw with Uruguay and then as a false nine in the 1-0 defeat to Japan. Despite being given a key role, he struggled to influence either match.
Speaking after the Japan loss, Tuchel was honest in his assessment. "He tried everything," he said. "I would say he was excellent in camp but, yeah, he struggles to show it on the pitch."
The England manager pointed to Foden's recent lack of minutes at club level as a possible factor. "Obviously he didn't have a lot of minutes for City recently. Then he came to camp with the brightest smile and was so good in training," Tuchel explained.
"I thought he would surprise us and play with the same excitement, but he struggles to have the full impact."
Foden has long found it difficult to replicate his club form on the international stage, even after his standout 2023/24 season. Now, with fierce competition in England's attacking positions, his place is under real threat.
When asked directly if a player struggling on the pitch could still be selected, Tuchel replied with a smile: "I can⦠the question would be if we will."
He added bluntly: "It's not a guarantee that he will come."
Despite his international struggles, Foden's numbers for City this season remain solid. He has scored 13 goals and provided eight assists in 51 appearances across all competitions. However, his output is down on his career-best campaign and his reduced role at club level has added further pressure at a crucial time.
With the World Cup approaching, Foden faces a defining run of games to prove he belongs.
