Thabo Cele embraces midfield competition as Kaizer Chiefs builds squad depth

Kaizer Chiefs midfield ace Thabo Cele says improved competition and quality in Amakhosi’s midfield are healthy and bring some competitiveness to the team.

The addition of Siphesihle Ndlovu from SuperSport United (now Isiwelele FC) has seen Chiefs add some experience and a competitive edge to the squad, and his quality has been evident in the first two matches of the season.

Cele insists competition is crucial in every position.

"I think in every position it's important to have competition and also if you look at our games, we have a lot of games. So, we need that squad depth in every position, obviously in the midfield also you can see that there's also that depth and competition which is healthy for the team because playing so many competitions we wanna compete in everything, everywhere and win games,” Cele said.

“So, it's important for the squad to have that depth."

The month of August will see Chiefs playing five league matches, and a good run of form could see them picking up a month of points from the 15 on offer.

With three of these played at home, including next week’s high-stakes game against defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns, Cele is emphasising the importance of making their home venue a fortress.

"It's important for a team like us to win home games like you are saying to improve the numbers  at the stadium because FNB is a huge stadium. I think with us getting good performances and good results you know, it's gonna be even more better atmosphere or crazy atmosphere because we want teams to feel that in our home games. So, it's important," he added.

Last week, FNB Stadium opened its doors for the first time to the new pitch, which was rehabilitated and installed from scratch during the off-season.

Ahead of their third Betway Premiership game against Richards Bay FC tomorrow at the Calabash, Cele and his teammates will be looking forward to a much better pitch, which also suits their game even better.
