Terrence Mashego arrival ends Stellies move for Happy Mashiane

SABC Sport can confirm that Stellenbosch FC have ended their interest in signing former Kaizer Chiefs left-back Happy Mashiane after securing the services of Terrence Mashego instead.

Mashiane became a free agent earlier this month after mutually terminating his contract with Chiefs, bringing to an end a seven-year association with the Soweto giants.

The 28-year-old had spent the second half of last season on loan at Siwelele FC, where he struggled for regular game time.

While there had been indications Siwelele could consider keeping him permanently if he became a free agent, the club has yet to make a formal move.

Information gathered by the public broadcaster indicates that Mashiane was invited by Stellenbosch for an assessment as he looked to revive his career under former Chiefs coach Gavin Hunt.

However, those plans changed when the Winelands outfit reached an agreement with Mamelodi Sundowns to sign Mashego on a season-long loan.

Mashego enjoyed an outstanding campaign on loan at Durban City, helping the club finish in the Betway Premiership top eight and lift the Nedbank Cup.

Durban City had hoped to retain the Bafana Bafana defender permanently, but were unable to meet Sundowns' valuation, while the Brazilians were also unwilling to sanction another loan move to the newly promoted side.

That opened the door for Stellenbosch, who have now secured Mashego's signature for the upcoming season.

His arrival effectively closes the chapter on Mashiane's hopes of joining the Cape club, leaving the former Amakhosi defender to continue searching for the next destination in his career.
