Swallows sign SuperSport defender Philips and asses two more free agents

SABC Sport can reveal Swallows FC have signed SuperSport United defender Keenan Phillips on a two-year deal.

The Dube Birds are finalising what’s likely to be a strong team ahead of the 2023/24 season following the announcement of Steve Komphela as the club’s new coach, with Musa Nyatama agreeing to assistant.

Phillips was touted as a player with immense potential and linked with a move to Kaizer Chiefs at one point, but SuperSport were able to hang on to the young defender in the past. He, however, featured in only four matches last season under coach Gavin Hunt and it’s understood Phillips was allowed to leave as a free agent on 1 July.

The public broadcaster has established Swallows moved quickly to tie him down to a permanent contract as one of Komphela’s first signings while there are ongoing talks with midfielder Andile Jali.

Jali is also on the market for a new club after parting ways with Mamelodi Sundowns in May and looks set to reunite with Komphela should both parties agree on the finer details to secure his move to the Dube Birds.

On Thursday, Swallows concluded talks with Orlando Pirates to take defender Bongani Sam on a second successive loan spell.

Midfielder Lantshene Phalane is also currently training with Swallows after spending the previous season at Royal AM - another Premier Soccer League (PSL) veteran who has worked with Komphela.

Phalane made 14 appearances at Royal AM, but seemed to fall out of favour with the technical team with his game time extremely limited by coach John Maduka in the second half of the season.

According to SABC Sport sources, Komphela has also expressed an interest in Seth Parusnath and has invited the talented midfielder for an assessment with the Dube Birds this week hoping for a positive outcome.

Parusnath was recently released by Sekhukhune United.
