Swallows FC get vital win against Maritzburg United

Swallows FC boosted their DStv Premiership survival hopes after beating bottom-placed Maritzburg United 1-0 on Thursday at Dobsonville Stadium.

The victory proved crucial for Swallows, who now sit five points clear of the relegation zone in 12th place. Maritzburg, on the other hand, remains at the bottom of the log, three points behind 14th-placed Marumo Gallants.

The game began with Swallows FC making one change from their previous match. Defender Mthokozisi Shwabule came in for striker Waseem Isaacs. Meanwhile, Maritzburg welcomed back Jose Ali Meza from suspension and Amadou Soukouna in their two changes from their last match.

Despite the early chances in the game, the sides cancelled each other out, and clear-cut chances were hard to come by. Maritzburg was the more attacking side towards the interval, but they were unable to convert any of their opportunities.

Swallows FC made a tactical change on 66 minutes, bringing on Isaacs for Kagiso Malinga. The substitution proved to be a good move as the Birds were more threatening on counter-attacks.

Late substitute David Uromi finally secured the vital goal for Swallows four minutes before time with a stunning curling shot from the edge of the box after a counter-attack.

The intensity of the game increased in the dying minutes as both teams felt they could still steal the three points. However, it was Swallows who emerged victorious and secured a vital win to boost their survival hopes.
