Sporting to discipline Viktor Gyokeres after missed training amid Arsenal interest

Sporting CP president Frederico Varandas has confirmed that striker Viktor Gyokeres will face internal disciplinary action after failing to report for pre-season training on Saturday.

Gyokeres was expected back on July 12 following an agreed extension to his off-season break. However, the Sweden international did not return, with reports from Portuguese journalist David Novo indicating the player informed the club of his decision not to attend amid ongoing transfer talks with Arsenal.

Speaking to local media, Varandas addressed the situation:

"We're calm. Everything can be resolved - with the end of the transfer window, a hefty fine, and an apology to the squad."

The Sporting president also dismissed suggestions that the absence was part of a tactic to force a move.

"If the geniuses behind this think they're putting pressure on us, they're mistaken. This only complicates things for the player. No one is above the club."

Arsenal have been in active negotiations for the 27-year-old forward, who enjoyed a prolific 2023/24 campaign. Sporting are believed to be holding out for 60.4 million pounds upfront, with an additional 8.6 million pounds in performance-based bonuses. Arsenal have yet to meet those terms but remain interested.

Since joining from Coventry City for around 20 million pounds last year, Gyokeres has scored 97 goals in 102 appearances across all competitions. His standout season included 54 goals in 52 games, playing a key role in Sporting's domestic double and a Champions League hat-trick against Manchester City.

Gyokeres previously spent time in English football with Brighton and Coventry, and a move to Arsenal would mark his return to the Premier League.

Negotiations between the two clubs are ongoing, but sources suggest the structure of the deal - particularly how much of the fee is guaranteed - remains a sticking point. Arsenal are said to be impressed by the player's desire to join but remain cautious, having identified alternative options should the move not materialize.
