Sithole opens up after challenging World Cup start

The support of his teammates and head coach Hugo Broos was enough for Bafana Bafana midfielder Sphephelo Sithole to recover from the opening game blues and he is now ready to deliver the team to the FIFA 2026 World Cup knockout phase.

This is how the Portuguese-based player described the opening 1-0 loss to hosts Mexico, where his mistake led to the opening goal, and he was also sent off in the second half.

However, Sithole is back now and looks to help the team progress to the knockout stage...

"I didn't have a good game against Mexico, but the support I got from the coach and the team was good."

Sithole returns at the right time, when his services are very much needed in this game, with Teboho Mokoena suspended, he might slot into the midfield.

Broos was asked about the absence of Mokoena and how he plans to deal with that...

"We have to be honest he is a big loss for the team. Teboho is a very good player and often decides how we are going to play on the day, and he is also a leader on and off the field.

"On the flip side we are here with 26 players and I believe in all of them, and we have full confidence in the player who will be replacing Mokoena."
