Campbell, who plies his trade in Belgium for Club Brugge, was a notable absentee when the National Men's U20 side went on to win their maiden continental crown in May, after his club exercised its discretion to not release him outside of the FIFA window.
The 20-year-old, however, is delighted to return home to be with his countryman as they gear up for the FIFA U20 World Cup in Chile, which is set to kick-off later this month.
"[Things in] Belgium are good, I can't complain. Everything is good, I'm staying positive and I'm happy to be back in South Africa with the U20 national team," said Campbell.
"I'm proud of the gents for winning AFCON and I'm proud of how well they did, and winning it is amazing – I'll forever support any decision, but I'm proud of the gents and we're just focussing on the World Cup now."
Speaking exclusively to SABC Sport, Campbell vowed to make the nation proud when asked what their ambitions are at the World Cup.
"It's just to win, go as far as we can and make the nation proud – there are 66 million people behind our backs, and we can't disappoint them," he added.
"We're going to work hard and try and achieve whatever we can, and we're going to make our nation proud for sure."
His availability for the age-group showpiece in South America remains up in the air, with no indication as yet from Club Brugge on whether they are willing to release him.
Amajita and Club Brugge midfielder Shandre Campbell discusses his return to the national team, missing the CAF U20 AFCON, his teammates' growth, and their FIFA U20 World Cup ambitions.
