Samir Nurkovic relishing first trophy in SA after Kaizer Chiefs near miss

More than three years since Kaizer Chiefs missed out on the league title by mere seconds, striker Samir Nurkovic is again on the verge of winning his first trophy in the Premier Soccer League.

In his debut season with the Glamour Boys, the Serbian forward was very nearly part of the side that would be crowned champions in September 2020, until Mamelodi Sundowns snatched that possibility away on the final day.

Nurkovic is now one match away from silverware with his new club TS Galaxy, should they beat Stellenbosch FC in the Carling Knockout final on Saturday, but he’s avoiding thinking too much about it.

"I never achieved something like that, never trying to put myself under that pressure to think, 'Oh, I have to win some trophy' or 'We need to do something,'" said Nurkovic.

"It's really important to stay firm on the ground and just keep working hard every training session and every game, pushing yourself to the maximum."

Nurkovic, 31, adds that coach Sead Ramovic’s tactics and what is asked of the team on the day matters more.

"Each and every player does whatever the coach is asking from us, and if it's meant to be, it's meant to be. So, like I said, just put in the hard work and everything else will come," he stressed.

The match will be broadcast LIVE on SABC 1 on Saturday, 16 December from 14:30.
