Salah chasing new milestone after Egypt end 92-year long wait

Egyptian national team captain and Liverpool star Mo Salah’s stature as the greatest footballer from that country, got another meaning when he led Egypt to their first ever win at the FIFA World Cup.

Egypt came back from a goal down to beat New Zealand 3-1, to win their first game at the World Cup in their fourth appearance. Salah netted the second goal in that game and now says toping the group is the next mission.

"I always give my best for the national team and I always try to give some of my experience to the younger players. Today is a very special day because it was our first ever World Cup win. I told them we wrote history today but we can write some more history if we qualify from first position in the group - that will be remembered for years to come."

Salah has recalled how they have not been fortunate with this current generation of Egypt, to have not added to the record seven Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) titles, falling short in two finals. 

He says now the mission is for their people to enjoy the show, as they simply need a win against Iran to be guaranteed top spot in the group.

Salah has carried this Egyptian team on his shoulders, and he looked calm yesterday as his teammates were jumping up and down with excitement at the end of the game. Only this generation has achieved this feat, with a team dominated by players from the Egyptian Premier League...
