SAFA to investigate "unfortunate" NEC member's comments about Banyana Banyana

The South African Football Association (SAFA) CEO Lydia Monyepao condemns comments made by SAFA National Executive Committee (NEC) member Monde Montshiwa that Banyana Banyana are going on holiday in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Montshiwa made the comments on his Facebook page this past weekend. This followed the controversial moment which saw the World Cup bound Banyana team not taking part in the send-off match against Botswana as they protested about the state of the pitch at Tsakane stadium.

Monyepao says Montshiwa’s comments and labeling of Banyana players, don’t reflect the views of SAFA NEC.

"If that's the case then it's unfortunate, that's not the message coming from a collective as the NEC. However, I don't know, I can't comment any further on that matter," she said.

SAFA have got a communication policy and back in 2014, the FA’s former Vice-President Chief Mwelo Nonkonyana was expelled from the organization for media comments he had made about then Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund.  “SAFA made all these players, they are just ungrateful”, these were some of Montshiwa’s comments on the day that the SAFA NEC is said to have held a special meeting and decided on sending another team, made up of players who have never been part of Banyana before.

They went on to lose 5-0 to the Mares. Monyepao says they are going to investigate this matter.

"I think I can't comment on that because I haven't seen the message, I don't know who the message is coming from so it will be premature for me to comment on it. We will investigate the matter and I will engage the president accordingly and the NEC accordingly once we have sufficient information on that."

Montshiwa’s comments on social media about Banyana Banyana, were some of the postings about this latest from SAFA NEC members, with some attacking the South African Football Players Union (SAFPU), the media (SABC in particular) and not sparring the intervention of government.
