SAFA forge ahead with ABC Motsepe playoffs despite legal chaos

The South African Football Association has insisted they will go ahead with the ABC Motsepe League national playoffs next week despite pending legal stand-offs.

The national playoffs is set to take place from 1-6 July in Tsakane, with five of the four provinces still awaiting outcomes of their legal challenges.

However, SAFA Competitions Committee Chairperson Kwenya Ngwenya says the legal outcomes will have no bearing on their programme, as they proceeded with the competition draw yesterday.

"The games will continue. If you go to our rules and regulations, they are empowering us as the competitions committee, that if we feel games should continue without [pending] cases, we will continue," stressed Ngwenya.

Only four provinces have confirmed winners: Kakamas Juventus (Northern Cape), African Warriors (Free State), Midlands Wanderers (KwaZulu-Natal), and The Bees (Mpumalanga).

Gomora United was also put into the hat as Gauteng winners, despite Highlands Park expressing intentions to interdict the playoffs, with Ngwenya vowing this is the last time legal matters in this league will threaten to disrupt their planning.

"As you are saying, it is worse and it is worrying us. As the chairperson of competitions, I've taken a stand that, before we start the season, I will visit all the provinces," he added.

"Besides that, during the course of the season, I will make sure to follow up each and every week after the games, if there's a case, I will make sure that they are finalised within 21 days.

"Because it is really worrying that you find there's a case that happened in February, but we are still talking about it now – that is totally out of order.

"For the next coming season, we will make sure that cases are done and finalised within 21 days, as the rule says, because this thing is caused by some people not respecting the rules."
