Ruben Amorim: Jose Mourinho's career paved the way for my Man Utd move

Ruben Amorim has paid tribute to Jose Mourinho after the former Manchester United boss was named as Bruno Lage's successor at Portuguese giants Benfica.

Amorim, who spent a significant part of his playing career at the Estádio da Luz, had himself been linked with the role before the club turned to Mourinho.

Speaking after Manchester United's recent victory over Chelsea, Amorim reflected on the impact Mourinho has had on Portuguese coaches breaking into the highest levels of the game.

Amorim, who has built a strong reputation in management since his retirement from playing, acknowledged that his own career trajectory owes much to Mourinho's trailblazing achievements.

He credited the two-time Champions League-winning coach with not only inspiring a generation but also proving that Portuguese managers could thrive on the international stage.

"He's the best Portuguese manager, and that won't change," Amorim told DAZN Portugal.

"He's always been a very special person in our football, but also in the world, and he opened all the doors for us.

"I wouldn't be here if it weren't for Jose Mourinho. I think it's going to be a lot of fun for you in Portugal, and we're going to enjoy it.

"But that's the way it is, and we'll be here, watching to see what happens, but focused only on Manchester, and that will be my only club."
