Roy Hodgson: Crystal Palace won't challenge Jordan Ayew's sending off

Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson is not interested in challenging the officials' decision to send off Jordan Ayew in the 2-1 defeat to Liverpool.

The Ghana international was issued a second yellow for his contact with Harvey Elliott when Palace were leading 1-0 in the 75th minute of the contest at Selhurst Park, with some - including pundits Rio Ferdinand and Peter Crouch - voicing their disagreement with the decision.

Referee Andrew Madley's marching orders marked the turning point in the encounter, as Mohamed Salah netted his 200th goal for the Reds in the following minute and Elliott sealed all three points in stoppage time.

Hodgson, who was also booked after protesting against the dismissal, said of the incident: "It was the last thing we wanted. I'm very disappointed for Jordan Ayew. I want you to put that out there.

"He'd been on four yellow cards for three matches and he has shown such discipline and such determination not to get an extra yellow card, but he has been sent off for two yellow cards.

"I don't speak to the Premier League or to the referees. I don't speak to (PGMOL chief) Howard Webb. I just try to get on with my job and do the best job that I can do."

Hodgson's slumping side have now gone five matches without a win and next travel to Manchester City amidst an injury crisis that got even worse after forward Odsonne Edouard (knee), goalkeeper Sam Johnstone (calf) and midfielder Jefferson Lerma (hamstring) all sustained issues in Saturday's contest.

With Ayew now suspended and both Eberechi Eze and Tyrick Mitchell among those unlikely to be fit by the weekend, Hodgson resigned himself to the fact that he will have to "put a team out with the players that are left" against the title-holders.

Liverpool leapt to the top of the Premier League table with Saturday's victory, sustaining their position following Arsenal's 1-0 loss to Aston Villa.

Jurgen Klopp was particularly pleased his "lucky" side were able to stage a comeback despite not being at their best, taking time to single out his five substitutes - including Elliott, who came on for Darwin Nunez in the 74th minute before scoring the winner in the first minute of stoppage time.

The Liverpool boss said: "For 76 minutes it was a really bad performance.

"The subs were super, super influential. A super impact. That's actually the story of the season so far that what we bring from the bench has a real impact.

"If Harvey mishits that ball it's a draw. If Mo isn't there where he is and the ball doesn't get deflected then we lose the game. I know these things happen like that, but the last 15, 20 minutes we deserved it. Before that we deserved nothing."
