Ronwen Williams fires Betway Premiership warning after dethroning

Mamelodi Sundowns captain Ronwen Williams has issued a stern warning to their Betway Premiership rivals that they will return with a vengeance in the 2026/27 season.

Sundowns saw themselves dethroned of the domestic league title for the first time in nine seasons as Orlando Pirates pipped them to the crown on the final day of the campaign.

The Buccaneers went on to lift their maiden title in 14 years on the eve of The Brazilians' historic second CAF Champions League triumph, and Williams admits it hurt to witness that from Rabat on Saturday.

"Obviously, we were disappointed, but you know it wasn't in our hands, and we prefer things to be in our hands so that we can be in control of it, but it wasn't to be. And we accepted that once the final whistle went," said Williams.

"We accepted that, and that's when we said, 'Guys, it's time to focus; we've got a big one,' which was the day after – the Sunday – the Champions League final. So you could see the disappointment, but then the quick change and focus from the players."

"That's why I say there are mentality monsters in this team, just to quickly change, because obviously we know the supporters weren't happy; we were not happy, but we had to change our mindset quickly and press the reset button and focus and go again because we knew how important it was."

Reflecting back to the Champions League final first leg at Loftus Versfeld Stadium, which took place just 24 hours after Pirates drew 0-0 with Durban City, the 34-year-old conceded they already felt the disappointment at that point.

Williams vowed to come back stronger next season, joking that Sundowns may even break the 90-point mark by winning 30 out of 30 league matches.

Next season, Sundowns will be contesting the Betway Premiership, MTN8, Carling Knockout, Nedbank Cup, CAF Champions League, CAF Super Cup, and FIFA Intercontinental Cup, making it yet another grueling campaign.
