Reneilwe Letsholonyane lifts lid on Botswana mission

Former Bafana Bafana midfielder Reneilwe Letsholonyane has opened up on his decision to join Matebele FC in Botswana as he looks to carve a path for himself as a head coach.

The 43-year-old was unveiled as the Botswana Premier League outfit's new coach earlier this week, having penned a two-year deal to lead a new project for the four-year-old club.

Speaking to SABC Sport, 'Yeye', who has served as an assistant with the South African national under-17, under-20 and most recently Bafana's CHAN squad, detailed the two-year journey to Gaborone.

"It has been an ongoing conversation, I think for the past two years there's been conversations of me coming to Botswana. Especially after I completed my CAF A-License because I did it here,” Letsholonyane said.

“So, ever since there's been that conversation of possibilities of me coming to this side but obviously things did not really materialise because of whatever reason. Around December, January, again this year, the same thing happened, conversations happened but it never materialised."

The prospect of joining Kuka Ntsu, as Matebele are also known, was initially discussed in July, when Letsholonyane was meant to join for the start of pre-season, but the timing was not ideal.

"And then, after the clash of legends this year, the conversation again started, obviously with our guy this side, Nick, he's our guy, so he obviously mentioned a few teams that were not having a coach at that time and he then spoke with the owner of my team now,” he added.

“They know each other, we then took over the conversation, myself and Shabba [Siphiwe Tshabala]. Initially I was supposed to be this side during preseason, late July."
