Real Madrid's Carlos Espi makes Spain U21 history with five-goal show

Real Madrid forward Carlos Espi made Spain Under-21 history with five goals in a remarkable 13-0 win over San Marino.

The 20-year-old became the first player to score five times in a single match for Spain Under-21s, doing so on his first start at this level.

Espi, who was making only his second appearance for the side, also provided two assists as Spain ran riot.

"It's a special night," Espi said after the match. "I really wanted to be here, to help the team, and I'm very happy."

Spain dominated from the start and Espi was ready to take advantage whenever opportunities appeared inside the penalty area.

"We came here motivated to win and we fought until the end," he added. "We knew we were going to be in the box. I was ready for any rebound, any moment, and I was there."

Spain Under-21 coach David Gordo was pleased with Espi's contribution, highlighting his ability to score and create chances for his team-mates.

Espi said he was proud of the reaction from his team-mates and shared the credit for his record-breaking performance with the rest of the squad. He also dedicated his achievement to his family and friends.

The quality of the opposition means the performance needs to be put into context, but Espi's impact in front of goal has been increasingly noticeable.

He had played only 26 minutes for Real Madrid in their opening eight matches of the season, but his late goals against Espanyol and Elche helped the club collect four points.

His five-goal display for Spain Under-21s has now provided another reminder of his natural finishing ability.

For Real Madrid, Espi offers a different option in attack. His strength is his movement and instinct inside the penalty area, where he has shown an ability to react quickly to loose balls and find scoring positions.

Real Madrid play their next match against Villarreal CF in La Liga on Saturday, October 10 at the Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid.
