Real Madrid derby delight turns to concern as Federico Valverde faces ban

Real Madrid celebrated a thrilling 3-2 win over Atletico Madrid on Sunday, but the mood quickly shifted as Federico Valverde faced a possible suspension following his late red card in the derby.

Vinicius Junior scored a brace (52' penalty, 72') and Valverde scored once to lead Los Blancos to the victory over Atletico.

The midfielder was dismissed in the 77th minute with Madrid protecting a narrow lead, and the incident is now set to be reviewed based on the referee's official report. Referee Jose Luis Munuera Montero noted that Valverde had kicked the ball "without being within playing distance", wording that could lead to a stricter disciplinary outcome.

If upheld, the decision could see Valverde banned for two matches, ruling him out of upcoming league fixtures against Mallorca and Girona. That would be a significant blow for Alvaro Arbeloa's side, given the midfielder's recent form.

Valverde had been one of Madrid's standout performers, scoring six goals in his last five matches and driving the team forward during a crucial stage of the title race.

The challenge itself came during a tense spell of the match. Valverde's tackle on Alex Baena immediately drew the referee's attention, with a straight red card shown on the spot. Replays suggested strong contact near the ankle, and despite protests from Madrid players, the decision was not overturned.

There was a brief VAR check, but the original call stood, leaving Madrid to see out the final minutes with ten men. They held firm to secure the victory, yet the focus has now shifted to the disciplinary outcome.
