Proteas World Cup bonuses to be revealed in June

Netball South Africa (NSA) will announce the Vitality Netball 2023 World Cup bonuses in June, CEO Blanche de la Guerre confirmed to SABC Sport they are still evaluating how best to reward the Proteas during the World Cup.

This month, technical sponsor Puma unveiled the Proteas' World Cup jersey in Cape Town, while medical aid giant Discovery signed a three-year wellness sponsorship deal with the NSA in February.

The highly anticipated tournament will take place at the International Convention Centre in Cape Town from 28 July to 6 August.

“It is still early to reveal the performance bonus packages. The 24 Proteas players are contracted and get monthly salaries. We will make announcements regarding the issue of bonuses.

“We are still engaging our sponsors to help us with a nice figure for the tournament playing on African soil for the first time in 60 years, and we will set a figure for places reached in the World Cup once we come up with an agreement with our sponsors.

The players will get big bonuses”, said De la Guerre.

In 2019, the Proteas finished fourth at the World Cup in Liverpool and received an R1.2 million bonus from sponsor Spar.

Four years ago, in England, they were promised a million for winning the World Cup, R750 000 for second place, R500 000 for third place and R200 000 for reaching the semi-finals.

De la Guerre revealed this time there would be a higher amount.

According to De la Guerre South Africa should expect more World Cup announcements from their corporate partners, but they would reserve the bonuses announcement last.

“The focus should be on preparing the team for the World Cup and not talk about money.

Everyone will be happy about the World Cup incentives when we make the big announcement in June, and more announcements will take place in the coming weeks before the tournament”.

The Proteas are currently on a two-week training camp in Stellenbosch and the players will return to their respective clubs next month to play in the Telkom Netball League.

The final training camp will be held in Cape Town in June.
