Polokwane City coach tips Thabang Matuludi as World Cup certainty

Polokwane City coach Phuti Mohafe has highlighted defender Thabang Matuludi’s qualities and consistency, insisting he has done enough to secure a place in the Bafana Bafana team for the FIFA World Cup squad.

The right back missed City’s 1-0 defeat to AmaZulu in the Betway Premiership on Saturday due to suspension but remains a key figure after being named in the squad to face Panama twice this month.

Mohafe said he cannot see how Matuludi misses out if he maintains his current form.

"The boy is humble and he is working hard, and I'm still saying that according to my perception, he is the second best right back. I'm not surprised that coach Broos is continuously selecting him for the preliminary squads."

The coach added that Thabang Matuludi remains grounded despite his success, setting a strong example for his teammates.

The defeat against AmaZulu without Matuludi provided a glimpse of how tough it can be for Mohafe to replace key players.

"Those who came in for this match, they did their best and they played well, it's just that we conceded and lost the match but the boys did well."

Meanwhile, with City’s top eight spot hanging by a thread, Mohafe believes it’s only a matter of time before they turn the tide.

"Missing chances and defending well, that is what we have to correct. We cannot create eight clear goalscoring opportunities and not even score one.

"We'll work on it, and the team that we are going to become one day will score five goals. We just need to work on our finishing."
