Pirates defender Sam in club search after Maritzburg exit

Orlando Pirates defender Bongani Sam looks set for a second loan spell this season with news that he is currently training with SuperSport United.

The Buccaneers had agreed for the left back to spend the 2022/23 season at Maritzburg United, but SABC Sport has established that Sam has not re-joined the club ahead of the resumption of the Premier Soccer League later this month.

It’s believed the player is being assessed by coach Gavin Hunt, who has previously expressed an interest in adding a left back to his squad.

Sam featured in nine of Maritzburg’s 13 DStv Premiership matches before a decision to sack coach John Maduka was taken during the current recess.

Fadlu Davids has since returned to the Team of Choice as his replacement, and is part of the reason behind several changes in the team with players now coming and going – including the arrival of defenders Mogamad De Goede, Khotso Moleko and Wayde Jooste.

And Davids knows Sam well having worked with him in the three years he was assistant coach at Pirates prior to being elevated to co-head coach alongside Mandla Ncikazi last season, so the player’s imminent departure suggests Davids has no plans for him in the team.

Pirates are still his parent club, and in that case it remains to be seen what happens to the player should SuperSport not follow through with a loan deal or even an option to buy him outright if he does impress Hunt.
