Orlando Pirates clinch historic MTN8 four-peat with extra-time win over Stellenbosch

Orlando Pirates claimed a historic fourth consecutive MTN8 title with a 3-0 victory over Stellenbosch at Mbombela Stadium on Saturday evening.

The triumph marked their first silverware under new coach Abdeslam Ouaddou.

Ouaddou, who succeeded Jose Riveiro earlier this season, made two notable changes to his starting XI, bringing in Sipho Mbule for the injured Patrick Maswanganyi and handing Relebohile Mofokeng a start over Oswin Appollis.

Stellenbosch, meanwhile, shuffled their line-up by introducing Thato Khiba, Ibraheem Jabaar and Khomotjo Lekoloane in place of Genino Palace, Sanele Barns and Lehlohonolo Mojela.

The first half saw Pirates dictate possession but fail to convert early chances. Thalente Mbatha and Mofokeng were off target, while Mbatha later forced Sage Stephens into a fine stop from distance.

Stellenbosch, though lively, could not find a way past the Soweto giants' defence, leaving the match goalless at half-time.

Evidence Makgopa went close shortly after the restart, his strike from Sihle Nduli's chipped pass again denied by Stephens.

Ouaddou responded with an attacking substitution, replacing Mbule with Appollis, but the breakthrough never came in regulation time.

Extra-time proved decisive. Within two minutes, substitute Tshepang Moremi tapped in Appollis's cross to break the deadlock.

Stellenbosch pushed forward with attacking changes, but were punished further as Tshegofatso Mabasa finished off Moremi's assist in the 103rd minute.

Pirates then shut the game down, with captain Nkosinathi Sibisi introduced to reinforce the backline. The night belonged to Moremi, who struck again in the 111th minute, racing onto Appollis's through ball to seal a 3-0 triumph.
