Nicolas Otamendi ends Argentina international career after World Cup heartbreak

The 38-year-old centre-back made 139 appearances for Argentina and helped the country win the 2022 World Cup as well as two Copa America titles. His final match came in the World Cup final in the United States, where Argentina were unable to defend their crown.

Otamendi announced his decision in an emotional message on Instagram.

"Today I have to write the most difficult words of my career," he said.

"As fate would have it, my last match was a World Cup final. It wasn't the result we wanted, but I'm leaving with my head held high, knowing that this team gave it their all right up to the very last second."

The experienced defender also thanked the country for giving him the greatest moment of his career.

"Thank you, Argentina, for allowing me to fulfil the dream of becoming a world champion," he said.

Otamendi recently returned to his homeland after completing a successful 16-year spell in European football. During that time he played for Porto, Valencia, Manchester City and Benfica before joining River Plate.

He represented Argentina at four FIFA World Cups and leaves the international stage as one of the country's most decorated defenders of the modern era.
