Newcastle striker Alexander Isak injury doubt for decisive final-day clash with Everton

Newcastle United face a nervy wait on the fitness of star striker Alexander Isak ahead of their high-stakes final-day Premier League clash with Everton - a match that could seal Champions League football for the Magpies next season.

Isak, the club's top scorer, was a surprise omission from the lineup in the narrow 1-0 defeat to Arsenal, having pulled up with groin discomfort after training. While Eddie Howe's side impressed for large stretches at the Emirates, especially in a dominant first half, they lacked the cutting edge in front of goal - something the Swede has consistently delivered all season.

Speaking after the defeat, manager Eddie Howe admitted Isak's availability for Sunday remains uncertain.

"That's unknown. I don't know," Howe said. "He only felt pain after training - during the session he was fine. It was just stiffness, but after a scan, it was clear he wasn't fit to play. He's had some groin issues before, so we'll see how he reacts this week."

Isak's absence was felt in the final third, where Newcastle created chances but failed to convert. Despite the loss, Howe remained upbeat about the performance and focused on the must-win game at St. James' Park.

"There was so much to take from the game," Howe reflected. "We know what's required now. Our home form has been strong and we've loved playing in front of our fans. There's no doubt they'll be behind us for what's our biggest game of the season."

The stakes couldn't be higher. A win over Everton will guarantee Newcastle a spot among Europe's elite - and the financial and reputational rewards that come with it. But doing so without Isak would be a blow. The 24-year-old has been a standout performer this season, delivering in key moments with a lethal finishing touch that few in the league can match.

"It's tough to overstate how important he's been," Howe said. "The standard of our play was still very high, but that final action - the finishing - is where he really stands out. He's been brilliant in front of goal. Unfortunately, none of those chances today fell to Callum [Wilson], but overall I thought we handled the game well, even in Isak's absence."

With the clock ticking toward Sunday's finale, all eyes will be on Isak's recovery - and on whether Newcastle can rise to the occasion, with or without their talisman.
