New deal reflects AGF's faith in Gift Links – agent

The South African extended his stay until 2031 despite attracting concrete interest from clubs in France and Major League Soccer. 

Speaking to SABC Sport, his long-time manager Paul Mitchell revealed AGF not only rejected multiple offers for Links but also rewarded his consistent performances with an improved deal to underline their belief he remains central to the club's ambitions for the foreseeable future.

"The new contract for Gift is very significant. Given the fact that not only did he have big interest from different clubs outside of Denmark with four or five offers having been on the table for him.

"After discussions with AGF, who made it very clear they don't to lose Gift and that they really want him to be part of their long term plans, Gift made his decision."

Mitchell confirmed that the fresh agreement also means Links will remain at the club in another capacity beyond his playing days. It’s the part of the reason why offers in the region of over a R100-million were turned down. 

The agent admitted Links was tempted by the prospect of a new challenge as offers reportedly arrived from French side Lens and Major League Soccer outfit Colorado Rapids. AGF, however, made staying in Denmark worth his while.

Mitchell all but ruled out another move given that the signed contract takes Links to his 32nd birthday and the player is also unlikely to return to SA. 

"We can never say never in football because you just never know what's behind the corner, coaches come and go, players come and go. In terms of this contract, both parties agree that it's not just a long term contract - it's one that takes him past the years when he thinks about retiring from the game and considers life after football. He is very settled in Denmark, his girlfriend is danish and he loves the city."
