New Barcelona youngster Xavi Espart in disbelief after Champions League debut

Xavi Espart was elated to make his debut appearance as a Barcelona player in the Champions League as a late substitute in the Round of 16 match against Newcastle United at St James' Park on Wednesday.

The 18-year-old La Masia graduate made his first appearance in UEFA'S premium continental competition after replacing Ronald Araujo in the 89th minute, shortly after Newcastle had scored the opener in the 1-1 draw.

"I couldn't believe it when I went on the pitch. I really enjoyed it and my emotions were through the roof," said the defender after the match.

"For a young guy like me, that the coach has trusted me, it meant everything. I really appreciate him. How he trusted in me, made me feel relaxed, under no pressure and so I could play how I know I can".

The youngster had featured in 12 matches for Barca's reserve team this season, scoring three goals while providing one assist.

âœI have to keep working, training and being ready to make the most of any other opportunity that comes my way,❠added Espart.
