Nestor Lorenzo - Colombia ready to adapt for Swiss World Cup battle

Colombia head coach Nestor Lorenzo believes his side's ability to adapt during matches will be crucial when they face Switzerland in Tuesday's FIFA World Cup last-16 clash.

Colombia have impressed throughout the tournament, conceding just one goal while remaining unbeaten. Lorenzo has regularly adjusted his team's tactics and player positions during games, and he believes his squad's intelligence has been one of their biggest strengths.

"I believe it is key for us to have those types of players, players who interpret the game with simplicity and know how to behave," Lorenzo told reporters. "They understand the game and recognise the different moments in a match. That helps the team grow. We have many versatile players who can adapt to different situations."

The South Americans have travelled extensively during the tournament, playing group matches in Mexico, Miami and Kansas before crossing into Canada for their knockout meeting with Switzerland. Lorenzo admitted the constant travel has created extra challenges but insisted his players have dealt with the demands well.

"It's not a good thing to travel so much," he said. "The time changes, the weather changes, and we've had to play in high altitude, humidity and dry conditions. We knew it would be like this because the World Cup is being held across three countries on such a large continent."

"It could have happened to any team, and it has happened to us. We just have to accept it, work through it day by day and produce our best performance."

Lorenzo also expects Colombia to face one of their toughest tests of the competition against Murat Yakin's well-drilled Swiss side.

"It will require plenty of tactical discipline because they are very organised," he said. "They are strong in attack and defence, and many of their movements are well rehearsed because their coach has been with them for several years."

"They have experienced players who have already played in World Cups, including Qatar in 2022. Many compete in the Premier League and Serie A, so we know this will be a very difficult match against a very good team."
