Mokwena: Sundowns has won a special trophy
The last installment of the Carling Black Label Cup in its current fashion was closed off in style on Saturday night as Mamelodi Sundowns once again showed their class, hammering a 10-man Orlando Pirates 4-0 in the final played at FNB stadium.
Having brushed aside AmaZulu 3-0 in the first semi-final earlier on the day, Sundowns finished the day as the only team that managed to score in the three full matches.
Playing in their first Carling Cup, Sundowns head coach Rhulani Mokwena says they have won a special tournament...
Newsworthy tournament, something that speaks to the past with regards to when I was still a very young boy, there was a tournament call Iwisa Spectacular and they generated a lot of interest," said Mokwena.
So congratulations to Carling and Premier Soccer League and the leadership of the Premier Soccer League for such an innovative idea."
"Congratulations to Mamelodi Sundowns the club and its entire team, they deserve the victory today. There was a lot of hard work put behind the scenes by everybody involved, from the senior Management to the technical team, the coaches, the Mamelodi Sundowns supporters because they put in a very strong line-up for the first match and congratulations also to the group of players that I also cannot stop giving praised to because they just continue to go about their business with a lot of diligence, professionalism , honesty and one cannot help but feel honoured to be their coach."
Ever since Mokwena took over as the head coach, Sundowns have scored 15 goals in four matches and are yet to concede a goal.
In this game, the young new sensation Cassius Mailula scored a brace, to take his tally to three goals in this tournament, and there were also goals from Siphelele Mkhulise and Grant Kekana.
When asked what has changed in this period, Mokwena says the players deserve all the credit for this turnaround,
The game belongs to the players. We have a little control over what happens over the 90 minutes, we can change things and influence with subs and influence sometimes with mentality, but ejulation has to go to the Sundowns players, Rulani added.
