Modise applauds Kasi football in Hollywoodbets’ Gauteng Championships rollout

Former Bafana Bafana midfielder Teko “General” Modise says Kasi tournaments have brought so much joy and progress to football talent in this country.

Modise was speaking to SABC Sport at the launch of the Hollywoodbets Gauteng Kasi Championship, a tournament to be played in Duduza, Ekurhuleni, this coming weekend. It pits champions of Kasi tournaments sponsored by the betting company, from Diski Nine-Nine (Duduza), El Kasico Cup (Vosloorus), KwaMahlobo Games (Soweto) and AmaGames KaSkopo (Daveyton)

"You know, we've seen the results of Kasi tournaments. We've seen many players go on and play in the PSL, as well as a lot of players going abroad from these types of initiatives, so it becomes very important," said Modise

"As much as we know that football has evolved, there are certain things that still needs to stay within our culture itself. We've heard stories about the old days about how Jomo [Sono] used to operate, how he would even hide behind the trees, but if you look at the type of talent he used to get for his teams."

"For the fact that there is still a culture like that, there are still guys from the township who still feel like they need to plough back and give opportunities to many youngsters who love football is very encouraging. And thanks to Hollywood Bets for still seeing the value in this and investing in it."

The Gauteng Kasi Championships pits champions of Kasi tournaments sponsored by the betting company, from Diski Nine-Nine (Duduza), El Kasico Cup (Vosloorus), KwaMahlobo Games (Soweto) and AmaGames KaSkopo (Daveyton). Kefentse Moagi, the founder of the El Kasico Cup and Tournament Director for the Gauteng Kasi Championships, shares their plans for this tournament.

"With the Hollywood Bets Gauteng Championship, the mandate is pretty simple: We are taking eight of the very best teams and pitting them against each other. It's just a culmination of what Hollywood Bets have done throughout the year in terms of sponsoring these tournaments. So ja, the objective is just to get the best of the best," said, Moagi
