Mailula spent the recently concluded season on loan at Belgian outfit KV Kortrijk, who secured promotion back to the country’s topflight. However, the club has decided against extending his stay beyond the current campaign, meaning the forward is due to return to parent club Toronto FC.
Information gathered by the public broadcaster suggests a return to Toronto is far from guaranteed, with the player and his representatives now open to considering opportunities elsewhere.
Furthermore, it’s believed that the 24-year-old is eager for a fresh start after a difficult spell abroad – but not at home just yet.
Mailula joined Toronto FC from Mamelodi Sundowns in 2023 in a deal believed to be worth around R30 million but struggled for consistent game time in the MLS, which led to loan spells away from the club, including a stint at Wydad Athletic Club under then coach Rulani Mokwena.
The striker made the FIFA Club World Cup squad with Wydad a year ago, featuring in all three group stage fixtures in America.
His time in Belgium was also disrupted by personal tragedy, with family bereavement forcing him to travel frequently between South Africa and Europe during the season. Mailula ultimately managed only three appearances for Kortrijk.
Despite the setbacks, the striker still has age on his side and remains highly regarded because of his performances in the Premier Soccer League during his successful spell at Sundowns
While a return to South Africa would undoubtedly attract interest from several clubs, there is a growing sense that Mailula wants another opportunity abroad before considering a move back home.
