Mikel Arteta: William Saliba 'very happy' at Arsenal amid Real Madrid interest

Reports in Spain have linked Real Madrid with a move for the 23-year-old centre-back, as the European giants prepare for a rebuild in defence. While Real are also monitoring other prospects, including Bournemouth's Dean Huijsen, Saliba has emerged as a top target due to his standout performances in the Premier League.

But speaking ahead of the season's run-in, Arteta dismissed fears of an imminent exit. "He's so happy here," the Arsenal boss said. "He wants to continue with us. I've spoken to him, and he's very settled. Of course, negotiations take time, and that's something for the club and (sporting director) Andrea Berta to handle, but I'm confident about where we stand."

Saliba's current deal runs until 2027, having extended his contract before the beginning of the season. However, Los Blancos' interest has sparked fresh scrutiny, particularly as Saliba continues to build a reputation as one of Europe's most promising defenders.

The player himself echoed Arteta's sentiments in a recent interview, making it clear he has unfinished business at Arsenal. "I'm really happy here," Saliba said. "I want to win big things with this club. If you leave without trophies, people forget you - I don't want that. I want to make history."

Despite some self-criticism about his form this season, Saliba remains focused on development. "I haven't been at my best," he admitted. "My partner Gabriel has been outstanding. I need to improve my concentration, contribute more goals, and push myself harder. The dream is to become the best defender in the world - but that only comes with winning."

With the Gunners still fighting in both the Champions League and Premier League, Saliba's immediate focus is clearly on delivering silverware. And if Arteta's confidence is any indication, Arsenal fans can rest easy - for now.
