Miguel insists Chiefs have no fear of Sundowns

The AmaKhosi vice-captain and Angolan international defender spoke at the Chiefs Village in Naturena yesterday, as he looked ahead to tomorrow afternoon’s Betway Premiership clash between his club and Sundowns at FNB Stadium (15:00). Sundowns have dominated this fixture in the last five years, winning seven matches with three ending in draws, but Miguel is in the mood for something different...

"We have to respect the fact that Sundowns won the CAF Champions League, but at the same time we are Kaizer Chiefs and we fight for our goals, and we fear no one - it doesn't matter if they are champions of the league or the Champions League."

Sundowns, who own 15 league titles to Chiefs’ four in the last 30 years of the PSL, won their first league game earlier this week, coming from behind to snatch a 3-2 win over their hoodoo side TS Galaxy. 

Miguel says this shows that they cannot be underestimated, even when they are trailing.

Chiefs come into this game sitting top of the log after back-to-back wins in their first two league matches. A win will see them register three straight wins in the league, but Miguel knows that the league is a marathon and it’s still too early to talk about the championship race...

"Although it's very early, I think it's important to start off on the right foot and in that way we can give confidence to ourselves and our supporters. We haven't achieved anything yet and we understand that it's a long journey, but we have a lot to achieve this season."

Miguel hasn’t been part of the Angolan national team selection for a very long time, but a sustained good showing for Chiefs, especially in big games like the Sundowns clash could also attract the eye of the Palancas Negras head coach Aliou Cisse for next month’s 2027 AFCON qualifiers.

Although, that’s not the immediate focus of the 30-year-old centre-back.
