Sundowns were held to a goalless stalemate at uMhlathuze Sports Ground on Sunday evening, right after Pirates salvaged a point against Chiefs at FNB Stadium.
Victory would have seen The Brazilians return to the top of the standings, with a game in hand, but Cardoso says they will have to make amends in the remaining five games.
"They drew? Obviously it's a missed opportunity. Of course, I didn't know, we had a match and I don't really know [what was happening]," said Cardoso.
"Their draw is even more dramatic because we should have taken the opportunity at hand and collect the points we needed to go ahead.
"But, look, there are five matches to be played – two in a row against Polokwane [City] and then we have Chiefs, and then we have Siwelele and then TS Galaxy."
Having dropped four points from their last two matches, the Portuguese mentor believes their fate remains in their own hands as they target 15 points from their remaining five matches.
"We have all the conditions to win all the matches, we just need to do it. Of course, we lost two opportunities, we lost four points in the last two matches after having 10 or 11 victories in a row," he acknowledged.
"It's obviously not a performance that will allow us to take the championship if we don't turn it around, so five matches, five victories – that's what we need to do."
