Michael Carrick looking forward to 'special game' as Liverpool visit Old Trafford

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick says he is looking forward to one of the standout fixtures in the Premier League calendar when Liverpool visit Old Trafford on Sunday.

The clash remains one of the biggest rivalries in world football with Carrick himself part of many fixtures against Liverpool as a player that he described as a "special game".

"It's certainly one of my favourite games. It's a standout game," Carrick told reporters. "There's big games and big rivalries that we have with other teams, but this one is right up there.

"The history, the ups and downs the history has produced in these kinds of games and the excitement, entertainment and emotion, which is a huge part of it, makes it a really special game.

"It's the edge and the competition, irrespective of league positions over the years of who has been on top at certain times, it's never really changed the feeling of the game and the emotion of the supporters.

"It's a special game to be part of and to come out on top is the best feeling you can get."

United were 2-1 winners at Anfield in the reverse fixture in October under former boss Ruben Amorim and have not did the league double over their bitter rivals since the the 2015/16 season.

Last season Liverpool won 3-0 at Old Trafford, before the teams played out a 2-2 draw at Anfield.
