Speaking to club media in an exclusive pre-Arsenal interview, Carrick revealed he was pleased not only with Cunha's reaction but also with the overall response of players who did not feature from the start in the 2â-0 win over Manchester City.
The United head coach stressed that togetherness and commitment to a common cause will be vital as the season enters a decisive phase.
Cunha, an off-season signing from Wolverhampton Wanderers, was introduced in the 71st minute, replacing opening goalscorer Bryan Mbeumo.
The Brazilian made an immediate impact with an outstanding cameo, providing energy and directness down the right flank. His driving run and pinpoint cross set up Patrick Dorgu for the clinching goal that sealed the derby victory.
The substitute could have added another assist later in the contest when Mason Mount found the net following Cunha's involvement, only for the effort to be ruled out.
"It's big. I think the disappointment, obviously, for all the boys who didn't start the game," said Carrick when asked about Cunha's impact from the bench.
"You know, coming on and making a difference and feeling it. Whether that's actually making a difference, and that's something we spoke about this week, making a difference on the pitch or from the sidelines, or from the changing room. I've seen the boys supporting in the Directors' Box and celebrating the goal.
"For me to see that attachment, the connection from everybody, is huge, moving forward.
"Matheus, you know, made a big impact when he came on.
"The goal, obviously, but in terms of how he went about the game. I was delighted with him.
"Again, it's something, moving forward, for everyone to feed off and that goes a long way."
