Mazraoui revels in victory over the Netherlands

Entering the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Morocco were always seen as one of the African teams that can go the furthest in the competition, and they lived up to those expectations last night, as they eliminated Netherlands 3-2 via penalties.

Morocco put up a great fight, netting the equaliser that took them into extra time in Monterrey, Mexico.

The Atlas Lions will face Canada in a Round of 16 clash in Houston on Saturday, and left-back Noussair Mazraoui says the feeling was akin to that of winning a final...

"This isn big accomplishment for the team because of the fighting spirit we showed up until the last moment in the game. I think we played a great game against this team, if you don't you cannot beat them."

Morocco, the 2022 semi-finalists, can now start to believe that the path to match or even better their run four years ago is possible after eliminating a top team like the Dutch Oranje.

Mazraoui says this game was a bit unfair to both teams, as it came a bit too early.

Asked about Canada, the goalscorer on the night, Diop says they cannot afford to underestimate the co-hosts after they saw off Bafana Bafana earlier this week.

Diop, a towering Fulham centre-back, was born in France to a Senegalese father and a Moroccan mother. The French youth international speaks about the powerful moment when the Royal Moroccan Football Federation’s Faouzi Lekjaa made a speech in their dressing room...

"The President came into the dressing room earlier and showed us a video of the people in Morocco. They don't even sleep in order to watch the games so this is more than just a game for us, we are playing for them."
