Mayo’s goal gives Ben Youssef joy, as Chiefs enjoy best league winning run

Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Khalil Ben Youssef was happy to see the club’s striker Khanyisa Mayo finally managing to score his second goal for the club last night during the 4-1 demolition of bottom of the log side Magesi FC at the Peter Mokaba stadium.

This was Chiefs’ consecutive win in the Betway Premiership, their best run in the league since 2019.

Mayo had been out with an injury for some time and also struggled with goals.

But Ben Youssef was happy to see him back scoring and other players like Reeve Frosler also returning.

"The most important thing is that the performance was there. We discussed a lot about the mentality that we have to prepare ourselves entirely for this game because it will be a difficult game but I'm so proud of the mentality that we show and the spirit that we show on the pitch,” Ben Youssef said.

“I'm also proud of the players coming from injury and coming from the bench, they gave us support, they gave us what we asked from them. Today Reeve is back and he gave two assists, also Mayo scored his second goal in the league and also he's back.

“It's very good for the confidence of the strikers. Like I said from the beginning we have a big squad. We are not a team that depends on one or two players, we have a big squad and any player who's ready will fight and help the team.

“He [Mayo] has been doing a lot and he was unlucky a little bit with injuries and he's back. In the training session he was fighting and he was a little bit unlucky.

In the last few games he didn't score but I think today it's his second goal and he will help the team a lot."

The win sees Chiefs consolidating their place in the top three with 45 points from 23 matches, still with a game in hand.

They are now 10 points behind the second placed Orlando Pirates, but another big positive for them is the form of their strikers as Flavio Silva netted his seventh league goal this season.

Ben Youssef is happy with the return of the Guinea-Bissau striker.

"It's not for me to discuss about Silva, Silva is showing from the first of the season that he's the kind of striker that can score from any situation in the box. He's so smart, he's so intelligent in the box and he's helping the team, now he's on seven goals.” the coach added.

“You see, even the goal was a technical individual and he scored and he helped us because we didn't start the game very well. So, he made the game easier for us."
