Manuel Neuer confirms Germany farewell after FIFA World Cup

The 40-year-old goalkeeper revealed that he does not plan to continue until the 2028 European Championship, but insisted he wanted to focus on helping Germany compete for another major trophy rather than looking ahead to his farewell.

"This will be my last tournament for Germany. I'm not planning on playing the Euros in two years," Neuer said during Germany's press conference.

"But I want to look forward to every game and not think about a farewell or potential last game."

Neuer, who returned from international retirement to represent the four-time world champions, believes Germany have the quality to challenge for the World Cup title. The goalkeeper said winning a second World Cup would be a special achievement.

"I absolutely believe the team is capable of winning it, otherwise I wouldn't be here," he said.

"To win my second World Cup would of course be very special for me. If I didn't see a chance, I wouldn't be sitting here today."

The Bayern Munich legend also praised Germany's next generation of goalkeepers, highlighting Jonas Urbig as a player with a bright future.

"Jonas is on a very good path and has it all in his own hands," Neuer said. "But I also have to say that my other colleagues are doing very well at their clubs. I have respect for all our goalkeepers."

Neuer also spoke about his relationship with Oliver Baumann, who lost his place in the squad after Neuer returned to international duty. The veteran goalkeeper praised Baumann's professionalism and contribution.

"In Herzogenaurach, we talked at length with each other regarding the development. We found open words there. Oli did an outstanding job - we have four top goalkeepers," he added.

Germany began their World Cup campaign in impressive fashion, beating Curacao 7-1 in their opening Group E match on 14 June. They will continue their tournament against Ivory Coast at Toronto Stadium on Saturday, 20 June, before facing Ecuador in their final group fixture.
