Manqoba Mngqithi slams Gallants’ defensive tactics after cup exit

Golden Arrows coach Manqoba Mngqithi has hit out at Marumo Gallants’ defensive tactics after Bahlabane Ba Ntwa dumped his side out of the Carling Knockout via penalties on Sunday.

Gallants will now meet Orlando Pirates in the final at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on 6 December, after a four-goal thriller that Mngqithi insists was dominated by only one team.

Speaking after the 2-2 draw in regulation time at the King Zwelithini Stadium, before Arrows were edged out in the shootout, Mngqithi expanded on his frustrations over Gallants’ cautious approach.

"During the extra time period, I don't think I've seen a team create so many chances in 15 minutes. At the end of the day, they came with a strategy, knowing very well that Washington Arubi is good at saving penalties.

"I'm not impressed with their football, but the summary of it is that they are in the final."

His opposite number Alexandre Lafitte on the other hand was in a better mood, reaching a cup final in his maiden season at Gallants.

"This is a fantastic result for the team and for the club. It was a really difficult game, especially in extra time, because the intensity decreased. Still, I liked the mentality from my team to stay in the game and force the penalty shootout."

The 28-year-old Frenchman believes his charges have what it takes to cause an upset against Pirates next month.
