Man City's Antoine Semenyo ends Ghana's 11-year wait for Player of the Month award

Man City's Antoine Semenyo ends Ghana's 11-year wait for Player of the Month award

Antoine Semenyo has enjoyed a remarkable rise at Manchester City after being crowned the Premier League Player of the Month for February, capping off a great run of form in his first weeks at the club.

The Premier League accolade also carries national significance, as the Ghana international became the first player from Ghana to win the monthly prize in more than a decade.

Semenyo's impact came soon after completing his January move from AFC Bournemouth, with the forward quickly adapting to Pep Guardiola's system and emerging as a key attacking figure for the reigning champions.

During five league appearances in February, the 24-year-old produced three goals and one assist, delivering a series of influential displays that helped City maintain their strong title push.

His goals arrived in important fixtures against Tottenham Hotspur, Fulham and Leeds United. Beyond the goals, Semenyo impressed with his flexibility, operating on either wing, through the middle as a striker and occasionally dropping into midfield to support build-up play.

Speaking after receiving the award, the Ghanaian forward described the recognition as one of the most memorable moments of his career so far.

"This is a brilliant moment for me. To win the Premier League Player of the Month award so soon after joining City is something I'll never forget," Semenyo told the club's official website.

"My focus now is on continuing to improve and helping City to achieve the best possible results. We have so much to play for and I'm really excited about this final period of the season."

Semenyo's achievement also places him among a select group of Ghanaian players to have won the honour. Former Tony Yeboah claimed the award twice in 1995 while at Leeds United, while Andre Ayew won it with Swansea City in August 2015.

He topped a competitive six-man shortlist that included Viktor Gyokeres, teammate Nico O'Reilly, Dango Ouattara, Benjamin Sesko and Virgil van Dijk after votes from fans were combined with those of a panel of football experts.
