Mamelodi Sundowns paid millions to get Lucas Moripe Stadium ready - Professor Ronnie Schloss

Premier Soccer League’s (PSL’s) Chief Operations Professor Ronnie Schloss has revealed that Mamelodi Sundowns spent millions of rands to carry out the renovations at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville to get it approved to host matches again.

Schloss was speaking on Radio 2000’s Game On Sport show with Thabiso Mosia last night.

This match venue was banned by the PSL from hosting matches in the middle of last season and with Loftus Stadium undergoing pitch maintenance until October, Sundowns had to make plans for an alternative venue.

With the Tshwane Municipality Metro appearing to be struggling to get things right at Lucas Moripe stadium, Schloss confirms that Sundowns took over.

"Now we closed Lucas Moripe as you mentioned there and in fairness to Sundowns they've come to the party and they fixed the floodlights, they fixed the leaks in the change rooms. They fixed a couple of millions I think on fixing up that stadium to bring it into an acceptable standard," Schloss said.

"Now we've got full use of that stadium, we've got all everything working. We've got the floodlights working, two blocks have been fixed up and Sundowns came to the party."

Sundowns will play its first game at the Lucas Moripe stadium tomorrow against Kaizer Chiefs after ensuring that it is in a good state with Schloss confirming that the problematic floodlights and ablution facilities have been fixed by the Brazilians.

He says they also hired their own electrical company.

"No, it's the municipality but Sundowns got their own electrical company. They've been working hard at it for the past two weeks. I closed down Lucas it must be about three months ago and then nothing was done.

As I said Sundowns came into the party three weeks ago. They worked on the stadium, they looked after the pitch. Now the venue is suitable and it's safe because everything is now working. Because if you gotta fill the stadium, you gotta have everything working."
