Mamelodi Sundowns drop points at Cape Town City

Cape Town City held Mamelodi Sundowns to a goalless draw in their DStv Premiership clash at the Cape Town Stadium on Sunday.

It was the first time this season that Sundowns have dropped league points, with the club previously enjoying a perfect record from their opening 11 games.

Rulani Mokwena's side nevertheless remained on top of the standings, with 34 points from 12 matches; six clear of second-placed Orlando Pirates, but having played three games less. City sit in third with 26 points from 15 games.

The Citizens were first in with a half-chance that was missed by Jo Paciencia.

Terrence Mashego then forced a save from City stopper Darren Keet but the home team responded with efforts from Luphumlo Sifumba and Jaedin Rhodes that narrowly missed the target.

Darwin Gonzalez was narrowly wide as Eric Tinkler's side continued to cause the Brazilians problems, while Thapelo Morena should have done better with his opportunity on 39 minutes that he fired over the City goal.

The first half ended with both Paciencia and Lorenzo Gordinho wasting two headed chance, while the second period began with Darwin Gonzalez's fierce drive well blocked.

Paciencia continued to be a threat for the home team, and Sphelele Mkhulise was left holding his head after wasting a 53rd minute chance to give his side the lead.

Both coaches rang the changes to effect the outcome of this game, and Shakeel April almost made an instant impact for City with a shot from the edge of the box that was forced wide of the target.

Peter Shalulile came as close as anyone to breaking the deadlock, with his 66th minute shot, and Rushine De Reuck put his 69th minute header inches over the crossbar.

Rhodes was wayward as the match drew to a close but ultimately both sides had to settle to a point apiece heading into Christmas.
