Ghana handed AFCON boost with Majeed Ashimeru returning from injury

Ghana have provided a positive update on injured midfielder Majeed Ashimeru at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

The 26-year-old Anderlecht player picked up a knock in the Africa Cup of Nations clash with Egypt.

The Black Stars started their AFCON campaign with a shock 2-1 loss to Cape Verde before securing a 2-2 draw with the Pharaohs.

Ashimeru came off for Iddrisu Baba in the 62 minute at Stade Felix Houphouet-Boigny.

As Ghana prepare to face Mozambique in their final group game, the Ghana Football Association say Ashimeru is expected to be in contention for selection.

A Ghana statement read: "Majeed Ashimeru has made significant progress on the injury he sustained during the Africa Cup of Nations group B game against Egypt on Thursday.

"The midfielder picked up a knock in the first half and was later substituted in the second half.

"He was thoroughly assessed by the medical team after the game with further checks carried out on Friday.

"The medical team is confident about the progress made and will continue to assess him Saturday afternoon before training."
