With many of football's biggest stars already making headlines in the tournament, Diaz ensured his name joined the conversation by producing a goal and an assist to inspire Colombia to all three points.
The Bayern Munich winger was the driving force behind Colombia's attack throughout the match. His creativity unlocked the Uzbekistan defence in the first half when he delivered a superb pass that allowed Daniel Munoz to score with an excellent finish and give the South Americans the lead.
Uzbekistan, making their World Cup debut, showed resilience and found an equaliser on the hour mark. Abbosbek Fayzullaev rose highest to head home and briefly put Colombia under pressure.
However, Diaz responded quickly. Just five minutes later, he restored Colombia's advantage with a composed finish into the far corner after another dangerous attacking move.
The result remained in doubt until deep into stoppage time when substitute Jaminton Campaz headed in a cross from Cucho Hernandez to seal the victory. Uzbekistan almost grabbed another goal late on, but Bekhruz Karimov saw his powerful effort strike the crossbar.
After the match, Diaz spoke of his pride at finally appearing on football's biggest stage.
"I worked and fought for this. I am living out my childhood dream of playing in a World Cup with my national team, and it's even better to have contributed a goal and an assist," he said.
The winger also highlighted his readiness for the tournament.
"I am in peak physical and mental condition; this is my first World Cup, and it is incredibly special."
Despite the win, Diaz believes Colombia can improve.
"It's very important to win this first game. We controlled the first half, but they played better in the second. We must improve."
Colombia's strong start puts them in a promising position in Group K ahead of their next match against DR Congo on 24 June in Guadalajara.Â
