The 28-year-old, who joined the Hammers from Lyon in 2022, has cited mental health and family as key reasons behind his decision to leave Europe.
Paqueta's spell at West Ham was marked by highs and lows. He played a pivotal role in the club's historic Conference League triumph in 2023, providing the assist for Jarrod Bowen's title-winning goal against Fiorentina. However, subsequent challenges-including two years of spot-fixing allegations, from which he was eventually cleared in July 2025 - took a toll on him personally.
In an emotional statement, Paqueta explained: "Some scars I'll carry for the rest of my life and one made me realise I can't keep on fighting against something that's no longer for me. I need this! For my mental health, my wife and my children. I just need to find joy in football again and regain my peace."
The Brazilian international revealed he had turned down offers from other European clubs in order to return home. "It was never about the club's current situation. When I first arrived, we faced similar challenges and ultimately won a title that will forever be part of history. I'm going home, but I'll always support you," he added.
West Ham have agreed to receive Paqueta's transfer fee in instalments, with Flamengo finalising the payment structure to ensure financial stability while pursuing other reinforcements. The midfielder has already signed a contract with Flamengo running until December 2029 and is expected to join ahead of the Brazilian top-flight season starting in March.
During his time at the London Stadium, Paqueta scored four goals and provided one assist in 18 Premier League appearances this season. He has been left out of Nuno Espirito Santo's squad since January 6, as discussions over his future continued. Despite his absence, West Ham have won three successive league matches - their best run since 2023 - but remain in the Premier League relegation zone, five points from safety.
